My name is Harmony Meghan, and I was due on December 9th, 1998, but I just couldn't wait to meet my mommy, so I came out early on November 27th. I had a little trouble getting out, so they had to do a c-section to get me to come out. But after that, I was totally healthy, and my mom was just happy I had arrived safely. Right from the start, I've been an intelligent and spritied child. Even as a baby, I always wanted to explore the world and was always curious about everything!

Now I am a big preschooler, and I although I'm still kinda tiny (chubby but a bit on the short side, with "delicate" features...), many people think I'm older than I really am because I can TALK so much! I am always making mommy laugh with all of the funny things I say. She is happy that I can talk so much though because it means she can tell what I want, and I can express my emotions to her clearly, which means we can both work on helping me learn as much as possible, without many barriers to that. I am just absorbing information like a little sponge these days, and picking up new words, expressions, mannerisms, as well as talents and skills, at a rapid pace.

3 year old update!

(November 27th, 2001)

I am now three years old, and I was really excited that today was my birthday! This year I wanted to have my friends over for a party, so mommy decorated the dining room like "Under the sea" for my party. I had six friends, and two younger baby siblings of the friends, so it was very busy, but we had lots of fun (and a yummy Little Mermaid cake!). :) It was an extra special party because this was probably the first birthday party I will be able to remember!

What am I up to these days?...

I am learning so much! and I have my own way of thinking about the world. I try to tell others that *I* know the real story ("No mommy, *this* is how we do it...") and sometimes those silly adults just don't get it the way I do.

I am very social these days, interacting much more with my peers than I did last year. When I was in the toddler room, I was very much into "parrallel play" but now that I am a preschooler, I enjoy playing with my friends. I am also somewhat of a leader. Sometimes my mommy laughs and tells me I'm bossy, but I know she appreciates that I'm not shy and know how to let people know what I like! (and when, and why, and a how.........)

Right now I am very big on pretending! It is my favourite game!!! I tell mommy that I am a baby tiger, a big hungry dinosaur, a tiny kitty cat, a monster, a mommy, a character from a movie, a baby, you name it! I am also really into crafts and drawing and writing. I can write some of the letters in my name, and I recognize almost all of the letters in the alphabet. I can also draw a happy face now, want to see?

As for the comedy routines, I'm still a constant source of amusement, and I think I am just so funny! :) I have this funny fake laugh too, so when I make a little joke or comment I think is funny, I will laugh like that. Here are a few of the cute things I've said lately...

  • When my mommy said she was writing a "big big paper" and so she couldn't come and get me from grandma's house until she was done, I said "Ok, when you're done doing your crafts, can you come and drive me to my home?" :)
  • To my friends at my birthday party who said "Happy Birthday", I replied, "No! It's not my birthday yet! I have three more sleeps! It's just my party today!"
  • When asked whether or not I want to watch Little Mermaid 1 or 2, I said "The one with Lemony!" (I was trying to remember her name- Melody)
  • When mom told me to get out of the bath and I didn't want to, I said "You're not my friend anymore!", put on a pout face, and crossed my arms!

And here are some of the things I say that my mom doesn't find so funny!

  • "I want to go downstaaaaaaiiiiirs!" (I make sure to whine this out to her while she is still half-asleep first thing in the morning...)
  • "I want to watch a show!" (sometimes at ok times when I know TV is allowed, but often I whine this one out just because I feel like being a bug...)

My days are pretty busy, and here's a basic routine for a typical day:

  • 7:30am- I'm awake and I go into mommy's room. Sometimes I climb into bed with her for a few minutes and we talk about what we're going to eat for breakfast or where we're going today, etc. Uusually my mom needs a bit of help getting out of bed that early, she is *not* a morning person. And sometimes I'm a little whiny in the morning, which probably doesn't help, but I usually cheer up as we get going a little!
  • 8:00am- We are downstairs eating breakfast. I usually get dressed upstairs first. I get to pick my own clothes! but I still need a bit of help getting dressed, especially for shirts, those are tricky!!
  • 8:30am- If it's a weekday, we are out the door to school. If it's a weekend, we might lounge around the family room a bit, maybe catch a show on TV, and we make a bigger breakfast, sometimes muffins, sometimes pancakes.
  • From 9:00/9:30 to 4:00/4:30 on weekdays- I am at daycare, in the preschooler program. My group is the Butterflies, and my teacher is Valerie and she is really fun! There are about 20 children upstairs with me, and 3-4 teachers there, but each group only has about 7 kids. We do different activities sometimes, and sometimes we all play together. We do a variety of activities like arts and crafts, sensory bins, imaginary play, music, books, circle time, etc!!! :)
  • On weekends, mommy and I do stuff around the house and we go out to various places. Last month I visited the Agriculture museum, and the museum of Nature, as well as some park visits, and of course some mall trips (if I get to have a tiny cart, I'm happy!) :)
  • After daycare- When mommy has night class, grandma Sue picks me up and I go there for dinner and to sleep overnight, but usually mommy is the one who picks me up and we drive home. Mommy cooks dinner while I watch Magic School Bus, which is on right at 5 (how handy for me and for mom!!). Then we eat dinner together. After dinner, we usually have some family time and play time when we do crafts or other activities.
  • 7pm- Bath time and then bed time! By the time I'm done my bath, I'm in my jammies, I've had a couple stories (or more than a couple if I can swing it!) ;), and had my "rock-a-byes" and a couple songs (right now my two favourites are "Lalaloo" and the sparrow song), I'm pretty tired and ready for lights out! Mommy always lies down with me for a cuddle, and when she leaves, she asks me to pick how many minutes I want her to check me in. Then she will give me hugs and kisses and say "I love you" (I usually say "I love you too") she will come and check me, and give me more kisses and hugs and say goodnight! I'm usually tired enough to go to sleep then but if I slept in the car on the way home from school sometimes I have a little trouble settling off and don't go to sleep until 9am. But I think it's because I have dropped my afternoon nap, and am still figuring out how to adjust my sleep patterns.
  • And that's my day! :)

Skills I am working on...

My biggest accomplishment this year has been to learn how to use the toilet all the time!! :) I wear big girl underwear during the day, and haven't had any accidents in over a month now!!! I have learnt to be aware of my body's signals, and I'm really good about telling someone when I need to use the washroom. I still wear pull-ups at night though, but I'm not in a big rush to do toilet learning at night, because I'm still quite young!

Letters and numbers are a big area of my development right now, and I am starting some "pre-reading" skills, like learning which letters are at the start of which names (I know which letters are for all the important people in my life, and I even know for example, that if you turn a "V for Valerie" upside-down, you get what looks like an "A for Poppa Al!". I know most of my letters, but not all of them yet, and although I can count to about 20, I am not yet all that familiar with what numbers look like. But I am getting there, and just like night toilet learning, there's no rush here either! For now, letters and numbers are just fun things to be curious about and to start learning about, without any pressure. :)

I am also working on my social skills and manners. I'm used to saying "please" and "thank-you" and am starting to grasp that it's polite to say "excuse me" when people are talking and I need to ask something. I am also learning a lot about what's ok and what's not ok with friends. I am a somewhat sensistive child, and when a friend hurts my feelings, I take it to heart and get upset, but I am learning to express my emotions so that others can understand what I am feeling.

That's all for now! :) Stay tuned for another update soon, and I'm sure by then I'll have learned even more exciting things! Thanks for reading all about me! :)

Update Archives

2 and 1/2 year update...

(July 2001)

Here are some of the neat things I am learning these days:

  • I just graduated to the preschool program at my daycare at the start of July! So far it has been a little tricky to adjust, because there are a lot more kids, and they are older than me, but I like all the new toys and activities there, and have been keeping very busy!
  • I am toilet learning! I'm almost there, and I only have a few accidents a week now. I'm still in a pull-up at night, but mommy says that's ok cause night-time toilet learning will take a bit longer.
  • I am doing lots of fun activities this summer, such as learning to swim with mommy (this week I swam two feet from a pool step right into mommy's arms! I was so proud of myself!), and riding in my baby seat on mommy's bike. I am also riding my own little read trike, and I'm getting really good, and fast! That's why my mom is glad I always wear my helmet.
  • I'm learning a lot about my feelings and emotions, and how to control them. I still have temper tantrums when I feel stressed and overwhelmed, but I'm working on dealing with frustration. It's hard being two sometimes though! There's so much I want to do, and I get really mad when I can't do it all!
  • I am continuing to learn my 2nd language- French! My mother speaks French to me at certain times, and we read French books together. I like the book where "Porcinet est peur et il se cache vite sous ses couvertures!!!" I even pretend to "cache" under my "couvertures" too, just like he does in the story! When mommy asked me the other week "Ou son tes souliers?", I went and found my shoes, so she knows that I understand a lot more French words than I speak. It helps that my daycare teachers are bilingual and that some of my friends at daycare are francophone.

I can make everyone laugh with some of my funny expressions! Here are some of my latest ones...

  • "So.... how's it going?"
  • "Babay... yeah yeah" (like a pop star or something!)
  • "I am getting bigger bigger bigger... up to the sky!"
  • "Alison Wonderland" (what I think the movie "Alice in Wonderland" is called...)
  • "I am quieter, you're louder... shhhh!"
  • "I'm the mommy, you're Harmony"

There are some words I still have not gotten the hang of! Here are some of them...

  • "Hahmee" (how I say my name sometimes)
  • "popisle" (popsicle)
  • "aminal" (animal)
  • "fi jous plait" (s'il vous plait - "please" in french)
  • "beadles" (beads)

My 2 year update...

(November 2000)

Hello! My name is Harmony Meghan, and I just turned 2 years old on November 27th, 2000! My mommy says that I'm a "spirited" child, whatever that means... I just know that I like to explore my world, and to talk about it. I also know that I love being active and curious, and I get very mad when anyone gets in the way of doing that! I guess you could say I'm a little stubborn, but hey, my twos haven't been *that* terrible, have they? ;)

Here are some of the things I love...

  • Singing and dancing
  • Playing outside and going to the park
  • Reading my books (again and again!)
  • Laughing and being silly

And here are some of the things I'm up to right now...

  • Wanting to do everything "by self!"
  • Sleeping in my new big girl bed in my new Pooh Bear room!
  • Counting to ten (in English and French!)
  • Asking all sorts of questions...

I'm also talking up a storm these days! Here are some of my "catch phrases"...

  • "Just kidding!"
  • "Where did my ____ go?"
  • "It's morning!" (said in the morning, and also at night to try to weasle out of bedtime!)
  • "BIG one!" "Tineeeee one!"

And here are some of the special people in my life right now...

  • My mommy! (of course!) ;)
  • Grandma Sue and Papa Al
  • Arianna, Bailey and Sarah ("AnnBaySarah!")
  • Great-grandmas Dee-Dee and Toni
  • Marc, Alicia, and Céline (teachers at daycare)
  • All of my friends at daycare!
